SUMMARY:AV Presents - An Evening with Joshua Paul
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Paul is a Southern Oregon native born and raised. His first musical memory was of playing his Jaminator and harmonica in front of a local grocery store at the age of four. Joshua spent most of his younger years focussing on school and playing a lot of soccer\, and after graduating from George Fox University with a degree in chemistry\, he worked in a cataract research lab at OHSU\, publishing a paper\, as a first author in the international journal titled Experimental Eye Research. He then spent ten years teaching chemistry\, among other science subjects\, at a few high schools in the Rogue Valley. In his mid twenties he became a part of the Use Your Gift Foundation\, a generous organization that pays for the recording of an album for young up-and-coming songwriters/performers. Since then he has also recorded several songs with local producer Jeff Pevar\, as well as Bredice Studios in Los Angeles. Joshua now plays music full time and often performs at local wineries\, bars\, and retirement communities\, and he even received an honorable mention for an original song that he submitted to the SongDoor International Songwriting Competition. DESCRIPTION:Nick Garrett-Powell is a performer and recording artist from Southern Oregon. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, singer-songwriter and recording engineer\, his philosophy is that “life is too short for one style of music.” \n​From a musical family\, Nick was taught to sing and play the piano and guitar by his parents\, Jim and Susan\, and his grandfather Bob Garrett\, with his aunt Bonnie another musical influence. \n​At 16\, he began studying under Paul Hendershott and Randy Mackay\, and by 18 he was sure he’d be a career musician and recording artist. \n​Beginning with the jazz choir and vocal groups in highschool\, Nick pursued academic music as a vocalist for 4 years. A student of classical voice\, piano and guitar at Southern Oregon University for two years\, Nick changed gears and got a degree in audio engineering from Musicians Institute in Hollywood\, California\, where he would reside and work in the audio and film industries before returning to Oregon as a freelance music worker and artist. \n​Performing onstage with acoustic guitars since the year 2000\, Nick found himself playing unaccompanied most of the time\, prompting him to begin developing his alternative style in an attempt to sound bigger than one instrument and voice. By 2002\, playing “slap bass” style on the acoustic guitar had become his calling card\, studying VHS tapes of Victor Wooten\, Michael Manring\, Billy Sheehan and others. Having seen a Chapman Stick performer in 2001\, the touchstyle method became the next focus when he discovered the work of Stanley Jordan. DESCRIPTION:Nick Garrett-Powell is a performer and recording artist from Southern Oregon. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, singer-songwriter and recording engineer\, his philosophy is that “life is too short for one style of music.” \n​From a musical family\, Nick was taught to sing and play the piano and guitar by his parents\, Jim and Susan\, and his grandfather Bob Garrett\, with his aunt Bonnie another musical influence. \n​At 16\, he began studying under Paul Hendershott and Randy Mackay\, and by 18 he was sure he’d be a career musician and recording artist. \n​Beginning with the jazz choir and vocal groups in highschool\, Nick pursued academic music as a vocalist for 4 years. A student of classical voice\, piano and guitar at Southern Oregon University for two years\, Nick changed gears and got a degree in audio engineering from Musicians Institute in Hollywood\, California\, where he would reside and work in the audio and film industries before returning to Oregon as a freelance music worker and artist. \n​Performing onstage with acoustic guitars since the year 2000\, Nick found himself playing unaccompanied most of the time\, prompting him to begin developing his alternative style in an attempt to sound bigger than one instrument and voice. By 2002\, playing “slap bass” style on the acoustic guitar had become his calling card\, studying VHS tapes of Victor Wooten\, Michael Manring\, Billy Sheehan and others. Having seen a Chapman Stick performer in 2001\, the touchstyle method became the next focus when he discovered the work of Stanley Jordan.
